I recently came across an interesting Dateline video about the history of Long Island, the island where I love. What I have always found interesting is that Long Island hardly seems like an island at all. Well technically it is an island, but it is so large that is often times doesn't appear to be. Throughout my life when I travel I have had to explain this to many people who believe Long Island to be something like Fire Island. In this documentary they mention how Long Island was the first true American suburb. This is something that I knew to some degree, but I was unaware of it being the first. I have always been fascinated by the fact that there is such diversity here. There are more urban areas around the center of the island and many suburban areas along the coast. There are even rural areas out east before you reach the Hamptons.
I could talk about my views on Long Island for a long time, but I think if you would really like to learn some interesting things about this wonderful island in New York, you can watch the 2-part video I uploaded to Vimeo.
